Fiddlin' Kids

Kiersten and Hunter decided to participate in their first fiddling contest held at the Graham County Fair Grounds.Kiersten was so very nervous. I felt so bad for her because she inherited my genes in the department. I kept telling her she didn't have to be in the fiddle contest, but that is where she differs from me as a child. She pushes herself to do things she is uncomfortable with. I couldn't have been prouder of her.
You can see the fear and nerves in her eyes. But she did it anyway.
Kiersten played her three songs from memory. She was accompanied by Beth on the guitar . All three pieces were beautiful! She did an amazing job!
Once she was actually playing the songs on the stage she was good. She was smiling with Beth and seemed to be more relaxed. She was very happy with her performance and I couldn't have been prouder. I was sad that Justin had missed seeing her play as he went to the office this Saturday.
Hunter is the complete opposite.............he has little to no nerves. He is just happy as a lark before he played on stage.
He was accompanied by Beth as well. He played his three songs wonderful! I was so proud of him!
A little story about Hunter and Beth. The night before this competition was a Friday and the Old Time Fiddler Association put on a potluck as well as letting people get up and play on stage. So we went so the kids could play on the stage in front of an audience before the competition. After the kids played then bands would get up and play their set. People started dancing to the music so I got Hunter and took him out for some Country dancing. He LOVED it! Then I let Logan have a turn dancing with me. The next thing I know Hunter is dancing with Beth............country swinging! It was the cutest thing ever. I thought....how sweet of Beth to ask Hunter to dance. When we sat down I told Hunter, "that was nice of Beth to ask you to dance." Hunter said, "What? She didn't ask me....I asked her!" Now that's even cuter!
The outcome was a little hard to take especially considering this was our first fiddling contest. Kiersten got 9th place............I know I am her mom but she honestly out played at least five more kids. She was devastated and it took all her courage to not cry up there on stage. I felt so bad for her. Come to find out they did not score one of her songs because it was not "old time fiddle" enough. Which really upset me because it was her teacher who picked her music. SO why punish a 10 year old. I swore we would NEVER do another fiddle contest again!!! Hunter was thrilled with his outcome.....he took second! They both got a little bit of money and a metal so it wasn't all bad. But I was sure this would be our first and last fiddling contest! I just felt so bad for Kiersten. I had other parents even coming up to me after the awards telling me they couldn't believe Kiersten didn't place higher because she played better then the other kids. One parent even said her daughter didn't deserve to get a better place then Kiersten. So it wasn't just me by any means. We didn't find out about the one song not being scored until a week later. It was frustrating to say the least.
This is the kids violin group playing at the Arizona's 100th birthday celebration at EAC. The kids played in the foyer while people were entering the building. They did a fabulous job and they sounded great together!
What a great looking AND sounded group of musicians!
Much to my shock we went to another fiddle competition. This time it was in Tucson. I would have never thought Kiersten would compete on stage again with the violin. But she never wants to let people down (her teacher Mrs. Skinner) and she has so much determination it's admirable! This is Jacob, Samantha, Hanna and Kiersten before they performed. We took the Yukon and piled all the girls in it............these three and Mrs. Kim Skinner and myself. It was fun to visit with Kim.........she is just a hoot! The boys car was Mr. Kevin DeRusha, Samantha's dad, Hunter, Jacob and Justice. I do have to say that the girls car beat the boys by a good 25 minutes.............not bragging....just saying for the record!!
What gorgeous kids these are!
I was so proud of all of them!
Samantha's dad, Mr. McMahan, accompanied both Hunter and Kiersten. I was so grateful to him to do this last minute. Hunter played his three songs great and looked stylish in the process. He wanted to look AWESOME he said so this was the outfit we came up with. He had many people tell him how cool he looked.........so that was a success! You might notice his foot in a ace bandage.....well what can I say if someone in our house hold doesn't have something broken, bandaged, stitched or burnt I just start randomly hitting kids! Totally kidding! Hunter had dropped a 24 inch tile on his foot the night before and his foot swelled up so much we couldn't get it in his shoe. I thought for sure he broke it the way it looked, but much to my surprise by the end of the weekend his foot felt much better.
Hunter and his best bud Justice Nelson.
I couldn't be prouder of my kids! They push themselves to be their best and they succeeded! I loved the way this competition was ran and the awards given. Only the top five kids were singled out....all the others got the same amount of money and never knew if they got 5th or last place. They all got to go up on stage and receive their money and applause. It was great I thought. Kiersten changed one of her songs due to the last experience. This time she placed 5th!!! She was so happy with herself and it helped her see that she is an amazing violinist. She learned never to give up due to a technicality. It was a great experience and tons of fun for all the kids.
We were so grateful for Mr. McMahan. The kids sounded so good with him and he makes them feel so good about themselves. Kiersten was a little nervous this time as well but when she came off the stage she told me, "Mom, it was actually fun this time!"
She was so excited when she took 4th place! I was so happy for her especially considering she still felt like a failure from the first contest. Which that whole situation was out of her hands. I was glad this experience was much better.
Not that it matters what place they get but not having your song scored was very traumatizing!
The warn up room at this school was a dance room.....Kiersten was so excited! She did all kinds of dance moves. It was fun for her and helped calm her nerves for sure. I had to take a picture of her doing what she loves most....DANCE!!!
She even tried talking her girlfriends in to trying out the bar. These girls were so fun.....they just kept me laughing.
By the time all the kids competed as well as Kim and Kevin it was like 4:00 and we had been there since 9:00. I just could not put these kids back in the car and go back to Safford. They deserved to have some fun......they had to be quite during the performances so it was a long day (for me too I must say). So Mr. DeRusha and Mr. McMahan went back to Safford and we kept all the kids....
I decided a little fun at Funtastics was just what we all needed!
All the kids were crazy excited to find out where we were taking them!
They more then earned it!
This is Hunter and Justice on the race cars.
Kiersten tore up Jacob and Hanna.....just the luck of the draw her car was faster.
The kids loved the water bumper cars............they got soaked!! They went on all the rides and had so much fun! We all played a round of goofy golf and then had dinner at the Olive Garden before heading home. We didn't get back until 12:30 p.m.
It was a really fun day!

Valentine's Day

We have a little tradition of taking little Valentine's around to friends and family around Valentine's day. Sometimes it's just store bought candy but when life permits we make something cute. This year we found time to make some cute little gifts for everyone.
I think I felt that since I was making about 400 candy grams for the PTO fundraiser that I should devote some time to my own kids as well.
My kids love getting to drop these off, ringing the door bell and running. These were also the valentine's my kids took to school......everyone loved them! The boys got these little cars...........they turned out cute! We always write the kids initials on the Valentine some where so our friends can guess who left it for them. Although by now everyone knows right away that it is us :) It was a fun time getting ready for Valentine's Day for Hunter as well. He has a crush on Lizzy Warren in his class. The rule at our house is that you can give someone a Valentine but part of it has to be homemade and creative. Hunter learned how to make duck tape flowers all on his own. So he made Lizzy a dozen roses. He made her a card that said, "These roses will never die, just like my love for you!" Can you say Rico Suave! He did a great job and had a great time making these for his Valentine! Our day was nothing outside the ordinary. Our evening was spent going to our kids activities which is typical.....we have some over achieving kids for sure! Kiersten had to dance at the Celebration for Arizona's 100th birthday at EAC. Plus both Kiersten and Hunter played their violins in the foyer as people were entering. So it wasn't the more romantic Valentine's I have every had but it was a good one.
I sure love my kids and my sweet husband!
My kids have been blessed with wonderful grandmas. From Grandma Boswell they each got $5 in a card that came in the mail. My kids just LOVE it when there is something in the mail for them. They were so excited to find their love letter and money from her.
Grammie Cluff gave them each a chocolate treat and wrote them each a sweet little note. The kids just love it! They really are blessed to be loved my so many!
Happy Valentine's Day!

Apple Juice and Airplanes

My kids are always asking me to tell them stories............stories about my childhood, stories about dating Justin, stories about them being babies, just any true story I can think of. They love to hear any little bit of information about us and our lives that they can't recall. So I thought when I remember something I should blog about it so in the future they can read all kinds of stories and things about me, Justin and our "story."
So why Apple Juice?
I don't particularly care for apple juice nor did I give my babies or toddlers apple juice very often............I always just gave them water because I didn't buy apple juice that much.
But there is two times in life when I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Apple Juice!
One is right after I have a baby............and I mean for the couple of days stay in the hospital I can not get enough apple juice. No joke! It is the best tasting thing to me and it has been that way with the birth of all my kids. Kind of crazy I know.
The other time I always LOVE Apple Juice is when flying in an airplane.
It is amazing to me the way the taste of something like Apple Juice can bring me right back to memories of just having a baby. It reminds me of the joy of seeing that new member of our family, of the immediate love that I have for them and for the relief that they are finally here safe and healthy. It reminds me of how in an instant my heart feels like it increased in size to make room for the newest love of my life. I am grateful for a loving Heavenly Father who gave us amazing bodies and senses. I love being reminded of sweet moments in life!

1st Pinewood Derby

I was sad to be missing Hunter's first pinewood derby while I was in Chicago. I planned my trip months in advance and I didn't even know about the pinewood derby or I would have gone a different week for sure.
But Hunter was understanding and Justin was a great dad............he even helped Hunter get his car ready days in advance......lol!
Brother French in our ward helped get Hunter's weights right on his car. And of course Grandpa Boswell helped out a ton! Shaped great and ready for paint! Pretty happy looking kid I'd say!
I guess the night Hunter's car was ready for paint was a school night. It was 9:00 by the time Justin got off work and got the kids settled for bed. Hunter told his dad, "I guess we have to wait til tomorrow night to paint my car huh?" Well Justin's response made Hunter's day he said, "Well how about we stay up and do it tonight?"
Hunter couldn't believe it.........so my boys stayed up late painting Hunter's car. What a great memory for them both! I think Justin was just as excited about the pinewood derby as Hunter was to be honest.
Dressed to kill in this boyscout uniform and ready to race!
Justin said Hunter was a great sport when he didn't win a race. And as a parent that is what you hope for in competitions like this. Hunter did win many races but he didn't place in the top 4. So he was bummed but Justin said he acted mature the whole night.
What a cute looking group of boys!
That night I called to see how thing went. Hunter talked to me for an hour and a half. It was so fun to talk to him. He gets in these adult conversation moods and I absolutely treasure every minute when he does. We talked about a lot of things but every so often he would go back to the pinewood derby. Even though I couldn't be there to watch him it was great to talk the night away with him about it!
Great job and example Hunter Jay!

Chicago Trip

I was counting down the days for my trip to Chicago............
I made plans for this trip back in November when my great mother-in-law told me about the cheap flights to Chicago and offered to keep my kids. I jumped at the chance to go see my sister!
It had been three years since I had been back to visit so I was very excited.
I wasn't all that sure about visiting in the dead of winter but I love my sister that much to at least try it once! We usually go in the summer time. Justin I am sure was hoping the snow might slow down some of our shopping, but Marla reassured him that she had two 4-wheel drive vehicles so the snow wouldn't be a problem...ha, ha!
When I was finally able to make it to Chicago, this is the dinner that awaited me! A feast for a King for sure. It was so yummy..........thanks Troy!
My flight on Friday ended up getting canceled due to a bad snow storm moving into the Midwest. Which I found out about once I was in Globe! Might I note that this was the first big snow storm Chicago got up to this point this winter.............just my luck! I rescheduled for the following morning early. So after talking it over with Justin and his mom we decided that it didn't make since for me to drive home and then get up and leave the following morning at like 3:00 a.m. Instead I traveled on to Mesa. I enjoyed a day of shopping, eating at the Cheesecake Factory and I even took in a movie, Joyful Noise. That wasn't my top choice of movies but it was the only one that started when I needed it to and that wasn't rated R.
It ended up being a fun relaxing day. I got to hang out with my adorable nephew, Tyler and visit with Chris and Melissa so it was great! Melissa and Chris were kind enough to let me stay at their house which was nice.
They following morning things went smooth and the flight was great! I was so excited to finally make it to Chicago!
And who wouldn't with food like this awaiting you! Scallops with bacon...delicious! Crab legs.......truly one of my favorites! I wish I would have taken a picture when I first got there. This is a couple of days later and it had rained so the snow melted quite a bit. Isn't my buddy Garrett a cutie! I had such fun playing with him. One night he was told to get in bed and he did. Then he snuck down the stairs and came to give me a hug! He randomly came up to me and would say, "Do you need a hug?" It just melted my heart! He is a easy three year old for sure! Just looking at this picture is making me hungry..........I love strawberry crepes. And these ones were to die for! This trip was different then all others I have taken to Chicago. The only other time I have gone without taking my kiddos with me was just after Marla had Garrett. So we typically just do kid friendly stuff and try to visit in between all that. However, this trip I had no kids to care for and Marla didn't have a newborn. So we just went and went and went! Several days we went out for Brunch. One of my favorite spots, they were all delicious though, was Eggsperience Pancakes & Cafe! We also ate at a place called Pomegranate Cafe which was yummy as well. Marla and I got to visit and laugh more then ever and I treasured even minute of it!
One day Marla made arrangements for Garrett and we headed to the city.
I love the city of Chicago!
We went on a tour of the oldest home in Chicago, this is the only standing pre-fire house there is in Chicago. It was very interesting! We got to visit the Glessner house and Clark house on Prairie Avenue. Such a neat area and great history.
We went to visit Troy and see his new office. He made partner at Holland and Knight Law Firm last year and man does he have a spectacular office view now. You can see the lake, Trump towers, and several other landmarks.
Glad I got to see his new office! It was amazing!
When we were walking to the theater to see Mama Mia I saw this sign and couldn't help but take a picture. When I saw it I immediately thought of Justin. He is a GOODMAN! I am so grateful to be married to him and I appreciate him letting me take this trip!
Did I mention I love visiting the city?
This was a great Italian restaurant. Actually it's three levels with three separate Italian restaurants. The atmosphere inside is great, you feel like you are eating on the streets of Italy. It was wonderful! Marla and I had a great time eating and visiting!
Then it was off to the Oriental Theater to see Mama Mia. This was my forth time seeing it but it was wonderful just the same.
Sorry this is such a bad picture...........my iPhone doesn't do well in low light.
The architecture of this theater is amazing! I have been to it before but every time it takes my breath away. Inside the actual theater is even more amazing but man are they strict about taking any pictures in there. Guess you'll just need to take a trip to Chicago to see it!
One of the days we visited downtown Naperville. It has cute little shops and cafes'. This day particularly cold so I got on my thermals and bright sweatpants. I could care less what I looked like I just wanted to be warm! Thought I should take a picture of the little shop sign above me..........Hot Mama! Yeah not so much "Hot" looking in my sweat pants...........lol. It was a maternity store any way so no need for me to go it there boy howdy!
But there was a need for us to stop at the La Chocolat Cafe for a little sweetness.
They have the best hot chocolates and desserts! So worth being out in the bitter cold. You know it's cold when my sister confirms that yes today is a cold day.......and she's use to it! My Arizona butt not so much!
I picked up some chocolates for my mother-in-law and mom while I was there. I have to think of the wonderful people back home that made my trip possible............I just LOVE them!
Me and my Chicago boys!
One night Marla and Troy had a Law firm thing to go to so I took the little boys to go see the movie, The adventures of Tin Tin. We had a great time and when we came out of the movie it was snowing. That's kind of a fun thing when you don't have to actually live in it!
Rieley is sixteen now and such a fun guy!
Even though he dogged me on movie night with the little boys I still love him! Guess I am not as cool of an aunt to him as I am to the little boys?
I just love my sister!
This trip was amazing! We had so much fun!
Yes Aubrey is 14 and taller then me. But being taller than me doesn't make a person that tall :)
I just adore Aubrey!
She has such a fun personality and can impersonate India Indian people to a T.
I came home with a fun treat for Hunter. Aubrey no longer needed this little guitar so she let Hunter have it. I must really love that kid to bring such a thing home with me :) He was beyond happy when I sent Justin a picture of it with my luggage at the airport! It was like Christmas morning when I gave it to him. He borrowed an amp from Spencer and our music room is really rockin' now to say the least. Now he wants to take guitar lessons, on top of his violin lessons and piano lessons!
I came home to a great surprise............Kiersten had sewn me an owl all on her own. As well as painted me a cute sign that reads, "Awesome mom living here!" What Amazing kids I have been blessed with!!!
I also got yummy cookies and a sweet note!
